In August 2021, the Belgian theatre house NTGent started building a Film Department in collaboration with the Institute of Fine Arts in Mosul. An ambitious project supported by and part of the UNESCO programme Revive the Spirit of Mosul funded by the European Union. Twenty students – boys and girls, all from Mosul - began training with a Belgian-Iraqi team of film teachers. They were taught camera techniques, directing, writing scenarios, editing, and presenting their finished projects. And those projects are bold, moving stories of their war-ravaged city.
“This collaboration allows us to develop the capabilities of students as well as teachers, but it’s also a chance to tell the whole world about the reality in the city of Mosul.” - Suleik Salem Al-Khabbaz - department head at the Institute of Fine Arts
