Concert Gabriel Yared & Elmer Bernstein
On 18 October, a very special event will form the grand finale of the 28th edition of the Flanders International Film Festival - Ghent: a double concert with the most enthralling film music of the French composer Gabriel Yared (The English Patient) and the New York-based Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven), preceded by the distribution of the very first World Soundtrack Awards. The evening promises to be unforgettable.
The concert will present the best of both worlds: that of the European Yared and of the American Bernstein. The short World Soundtrack Awards ceremony at the beginning of the evening is offered as a bonus.
The World Soundtrack Awards are an initiative of the recently founded World Soundtrack Academy. One of the tasks of the Academy of the worldwide promotion of film music, a.o. by the distribution of the World Soundtrack Awards. In the meantime, the Academy has more than 150 members among whom, in addition to Bernstein and Yared, Hans Zimmer, Patrick Doyle, Elliot Goldenthal, Toots Thielemans, John Powell, Lalo Schifrin, Jean-Claude Petit, Vladimir Cosma, Rachel Portman, Trevor Jones, Dirk Brossé, and Tan Dun who has won an Oscar for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon this year.
In addition to the World Soundtrack Awards for the Film Composer and the Discovery of the Year, there are Awards in the categories Best Original Soundtrack, Best Original Song written for a Film, Best Score not edited on CD, and Most Creative Appliance of Existing Material on a Soundtrack. Furthermore, there are special Career Awards and the Public Choice Award whose winners will be appointed by fans of film music. During the distribution of the first World Soundtrack Awards and the concert, the Belgian National Orchestra will be conducted by Yared and Bernstein, with Dirk Brossé as a musical advisor. Meeting place: Stedelijke Concertzaal De Bijloke. (Municipal Concert Hall De Bijloke)
