A Private Life

I first met the real Jack and Stella In 1977. They were living quietly In Cape Town, where their small house was called "C'est si bon". They had a relationship we all dream about: you meet someone and fall in love, get married, have children and you care for each other, and you want nothing else. A kind of ideal marriage. But they were not married, although they would dearly have liked to have been, because they lived in South Africa. They had been living across the colour bar for the best part of 30 years, trying to live an ordinary life Ina country which denied it to them. (Francis Gerard)
