A mysterious French woman with a fondness for the rice wine makgeolli appears in Seoul. The new film by quintessential South Korean cinephile cult director Hong Sang-soo with Isabelle Huppert in the lead is a tragicomic reflection that further builds upon his breezy, philosophical oeuvre of quietly elusive studies of the everyday. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize in Berlin.
Hong Sang-soo seems like the most hard-working man in show business. Almost invariably, the South Korean director releases two films every year. A Traveler's Needs is his third collaboration with French actress Isabelle Huppert. She plays Iris, an eccentric French woman who ended up in Seoul and now shares an apartment with a young student. Their bizarre relationship is a worrying mystery to the student's mother. Iris tries to make a living as a French teacher. Her methods are so strange - she has her students incessantly recite falsified French translations of a personal story by heart - that her character only becomes more enigmatic. Not that Hong (as always taking up the credits of screenwriter, composer, cinematographer and editor) provides us with answers. It's up to the viewer to fill in the gaps. Another breezy entry into one of the most consistent oeuvres by a contemporary filmmaker.
