The Malaysian, Taiwan-trained director Tsai Ming-liang (Goodbye, Dragon Inn; The Wayward Cloud) is one of the most original filmmakers of the past thirty years. With Abiding Nowhere, the tenth entry in the Walker series about a red-robed monk moving at a hypnotic slow pace, he completely sets aside narrative tendencies and invites the viewer to engage in contemplation in a cinema room. A unique experience, unlike anything else.
Next to his narrative features - though even these have become increasingly experimental as the years have gone by - Tsai Ming-liang has been building the meditative Walker series. These are films or art installations of varying length centred around a Buddhist monk moving extremely slow, clad in a kāṣāya, a saffron-coloured traditional robe. It always looks like the picture is in slow-motion, but in reality Lee Kang-shen (Tsai's fetish actor) moves extremely slowly. Abiding Nowhere is the tenth and perhaps last Walker film. This time, the walker glides past a series of iconic spots in Washington. These excursions are sporadically interspersed with footage of a young man's activities. Don't expect a story, but a contemplative film with no dialogue.
