The rights of LGBTQAI+ individuals in Hong Kong are subpar, as revealed in the understated mourning drama All Shall Be Well. When Angie, in her sixties, loses her partner with whom she had been living together for the past thirty years, she also faces the threat of losing the roof over her head. Ray Yeung's tender story is a captivating portrait of loss, family dynamics, and Hong Kong's housing crisis.
Sixty-somethings Pat and Angie have been a couple for forty years. Three decades ago, they moved into their current flat, bought by Pat. When Pat dies, Angie slowly loses her grip. In Hong Kong, same-sex marriage is still not allowed. This means that Angie does not get to decide on the funeral, nor does she have the right to continue living in the flat. She initially suspect she does, as she has an excellent relationship with her in-laws. At least, she has always thought so. In reality, things are a lot more difficult. All Shall Be Well, a tender grief drama by Ray Yeung, shows how Hong Kong doesn't exactly makes things easy for lgbtqia+ people. Yeung perfectly manages to keep far from caricatures. Just about everyone in the film, including the greedy in-laws, has essentially good intentions. It's this nuanced complexity that makes All Shall Be Well a gem.
