Never was a film more aptly titled, for here is a feast for the eyes, ears, and vicariously, for the palate. This Danish delight tells the 19th-century story of two beautiful sisters, Philippa and Martina, growing to spinsterhood in a tiny, rugged, puritan coastal community. In the autumn of their years, they have taken on a French exile, Babette, as their housekeeper.
Babette's only connection with France is a lottery ticket renewed annually and which, to her great pleasure, suddenly yields a 10,000 franc win. Babette, who was once a celebrated Parisian chef, offers to cook a sumptuous dinner funded from her winnings.
