A German officer fails to kill himself in the subterranean prison where Resistance men keep guard while burned bodies pass by, hanging from moving wire in front of cremation ovens. He escapes to find a Danish woman. She tells him that he cannot pass all responsibility for the blinding of a teenage boy on to the SS. She then appears to help him find an escape route through a forest, but instead has him trapped by the Resistance. She blinds him with a wooden dagger and leaves him to crawl among the trees where he once, as a child and also later, made attempts to make conversation with the birds.
