A rare chance to see the superior silent version of the Hitchcock classic. Although the director made ingenious use of sound, it was still at a primitive stage, awkward and obtrusive. As Variety put in 1983, 'The cutting in the silent version seems utterly smooth and skilful, making it a fast-paced, altogether riveting picture, which is not the case with the talkie'.
