During Nazi Germany’s mass bombing attacks against the United Kingdom, a working-class mother (Saoirse Ronan) is determined to reunite with her nine-year-old son. With Blitz, Oscar-winning writer-director Steve McQueen (Hunger, 12 Years a Slave, Small Axe) honours the enduring wartime spirit of Londoners and once again shows how to bring historical drama to life.
During World War II, the German air force orchestrated a series of bombing raids on the UK between September 1940 and May 1941. The British press called it the "Blitz", after the German word "Blitzkrieg" (meaning "lightning war"). London in particular was hit hard. A third of the capital ended in ruins and more than 40.000 civilians died because of the mass air attacks. Despite this, the attacks failed to break the morale of the population. In honour of the Londoners and what they endured at the time, Steve McQueen wrote and directed Blitz, the story of a working-class family determined to reunite. The man behind Hunger (FFG2008), Oscar-winner 12 Years a Slave (2013), and the miniseries Small Axe (2020) is no stranger to bringing historical drama to the big screen and lets his latest feature resonate far beyond the past it's depicting. As in The Outrun (also selected for FFG), Saoirse Ronan shines in the lead role.
