In a small town in 19th centu- ry Spain a provincial doctor unsuccessfully courts the mother superior of the local convent. Then, one day, a baby girl in a basket is left at the door of the convent. The founding stimulates the maternal instincts of the cloistered nuns and they lavish it with attention. Don José, the doctor, the only man allowed to visit the convent regularly, learns of the baby and offers the nuns a solution to their dilemma - he'll adopt the baby so that they may raise it and educate it.
