Victor Erice, director of The Spirit of the Beehive, makes a triumphant comeback after more than three decades with Cerrar los ojos, telling a story about a filmmaker trying to solve a mystery from the past.
31 years have passed since Spanish master Víctor Erice last made a film. The director built his reputation on just a couple of titles (The Spirit of the Beehive and El sur), but that rightfully earned him his place in film history. Cerrar los ojos is definitely not out of place in that list of timeless classics. What the films have in common: a belief in the power of cinema to change lives. The main character of Cerrar los ojos is a director-writer who hasn't shot a film in decades and lives like a hermit in a fishing village. The lead actor of his last, unfinished film disappeared during filming and, at the request of a TV show, the director delves into the past twenty years later. Slowly, he peels away layer after layer in search of the truth. But does the truth even exist? And could it be that only cinema holds it?
“The director’s first feature in 30 years is a mysterious, digressive, long and baggily constructed film possessed of a distinctive richness and humanity, all about the balance between memory and forgetting which we all negotiate as we come to the end of our lives. And it is also about cinema.” - The Guardian
