In 1982, 500 miles south of Moscow in Rostov-on-Don, a body is found, unearthed after heavy rains hit the countryside. Its discovery sparks a search through the woods, where seven more bodies are found in various stages of decomposition. After the autopsy Burakov concludes that a serial killer is responsible. But to the authorities serial killers do not exist in the Soviet Union. They are "a decadent Western phenomenon..."
