In search of her estranged niece, Lia, a retired history teacher from Georgia, ends up in Istanbul with her neighbour Achi. The fourth feature film by Swedish-Georgian director Levan Akin (And Then We Danced) is an inspiring and meandering quest through the colourful trans community of the Turkish metropolis. Described by international film magazine Screen Daily as an "eloquent vise of acceptance", Crossing Istanbul manages to weave together its characters' emotional and political demons: the heartwarming stages of the arduous quest reveal both the repentance and perseverance of the endearing but unlikely duo. Tenderness and humour definitely take precedence in this emotionally rich story, all the more so when activist and lawyer Evrim, who fervently advocates for the rights and freedom of transgender sex workers, crosses paths with Lia and Achi.
