For two months, director Lars von Trier turned an Art Museum into a living installation, developping the artistic principles that later fostered the feature films ‘The Idiots’ and ‘The Celebration’. 53 characters inhabiting 19 rooms – their moods dictated by the movements of unsuspecting ants in New Mexico – gradually transcend the subtle line between fiction and reality. As if under a microscope, basic human instincts are explored uncompromisingly. Intercut with the fictional narrative evolving during the exhibition, the actors in hindsight reflect over the process – and Shakespeare’s words that Life is a Stage has never been more true...
