Originally title simply "Dedee", this French melodrama is set in a seamy section of Antwerp. Simone Signoret plays Dedee D'Anvers, an habitue of the local bars who has a magnet effect on men - usually the dregs of the species. Bar owner Marco is Dedee's most frequent, and most abusive bedmate. Sea captain Francesco genuinely loves Dedee, and offers to take her way, but Marco spoils this lovely setup by killing Francesco. Dedee's faithful friend Monsieur Rene sees to it that Marco suffers for his crime. Dedee D'Anvers was released in some English-speaking areas as "Woman of Antwerp".
