Burned into the public’s psyche over the past one hundred years, the name Dracula evokes dread and horror – but most of all fascination. Directed by Guy Maddin, choreographed by Mark Godden and performed by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the film drives a stake through the heart of all the jokes and delivers an erotic, gothic silent movie that delves into our deeply-held ambiguity about sex. The ballet, shot in black and white with splashes of bold red, and set to the epic music of Gustav Mahler, is daring and difficult fare. The film combines sensuous dances with pantomimed scenes and intertitles, richly reminiscent of silent films. (press kit)
