The latest offering from the Finnish director Kaurismaki uses unemployment and recession as narrative forces, but is bereft of the melancholic traits that usually inhabit his work. In the
director's words, this film is concerned with the mental, rather than the financial effects of
unemployment: "The unemployment situation in Finland - and, for that matter, anywhere else
in the world - is so desperate that I believe a film can have no other purpose than to give
hope." Drifting Clouds focuses upon the lives of a couple, Ilona and Lauri, who both find
themselves without work. A few months later, Melartin, an ex-colleague of Ilona, suggests that
they should open their own restaurant...
