When Evie goes on holiday with her mother in a mining village on the English coast, she immediately catches sight of the mysterious Adam. The two regularly slip away to the mine on the outskirts of the village. There, they can escape the nasty bullies in the streets and the palpable absence of their fathers, but myth and reality begin to intertwine. With Edge of Summer, fiction newcomer Lucy Cohen brings a dreamy childhood story wrapped in a psychological thriller that lies somewhere in the middle between Aftersun (2022) and Falcon Lake (FFG2022). Following her success with the documentary Kingdom of Us (2017), Cohen again explores how young people deal with loss in all its forms. Cinematographer Rachel Clark swears by a nostalgic atmosphere and gives her images a hazy texture that draws you completely into the (mining) depths of this haunting coming-of-age story.
