Ripstein has based this extraordinary film on a real event, a man who kept his family locked up in his house for 18 years. In the film he is a megalomaniac who believes that one day he will be recognised as a genius; in the meantime he makes a living by selling rat poison which his family prepares. His wife, who pretends to agree with him, secretly tells their three children stories about the mysterious world. Disintegration begins with incest and further repression.
