Don Alejandro, a wealthy old widower, distracts himself by playing chess, shadow-conducting Haydn 's 'Creation' and riding a white horse through the local woods. One day, he meets a precocious bright 13-year-old schoolgirl, Goyita, who is busy rehearsing the role of Lady Macbeth for the school play. Goyita reveals that she knew his wife, Isabel, who destroyed her birds' nests and was a snob. Upset by his attraction to this young gir1, Alejandro visits his mistress in Salamanca, about which he later lies to Goyita, who insists that he loves her as a woman.
