End of the Night

With each successive child my wife gave birth to, I began to have the sensation of being pulled into oblivion. While this was not a particularly unwelcome feeling, it was, however, one which bothered me to the extent where I felt a kind of urge to write something about it. The starting point for actually writing a film script though, came about through sounds, not images, and in particular, the somewhat compelling sound of the amplification of an unborn baby's heartbeat. I felt that if I could tie that sound to the two other sounds of draining water and deep breathing, I might have something worth making a film out of. (K. McNally)
