This film tackles a theme that is just about as old as the erotic literature itself, but especially cultivated on the French stage. It follows the events that take place in a ménage à trois - in this particular case a ménage à quatre. The plot centres on a sculptor who is in love with his best friend’s wife, and is shocked by the friend’s complacency. The friend is an entomologist who lectures on the sex life of beetles and who is quite prepared to give up his sophisticated wife for a girl who wins his affections with stuffed cabbage. Stiller made a semi-satirical, semi-serious comedy in a luxurious setting, full of piquant situations and rapidly lined-out dialogue.
