Favoriten, named after Vienna’s most populous and diverse district, follows the vibrant community of an elementary school class over the course of three years. 25 children and their dedicated teacher. Director Ruth Beckermann’s heartwarming and inspirational exploration to discover who they are, was awarded the Peace Film Prize in Berlin.
Favoriten is the name of Vienna's highly-populated and diverse district that is home to the Austrian capital's largest Turkish and Balkan communities. It's in this district that Ruth Beckermann's eponymous documentary follows a class of twenty-five children and their dedicated teacher Ilkay Idiskut for three years. Idiskut deftly navigates between everything that goes on within the classroom walls, and sometimes beyond. Beckermann is not afraid to address issues such as a glaring staff shortage or language barriers, but she always keeps the tone light and hopeful. Favoriten, awarded the Peace Film Prize at the 2024 Berlinale, joins titles like Être et avoir (2002), Inclusief (2018) and Herr Bachmann und seine Klasse (FFG2021), documentaries that provide unbiased, inspiring and intimate insights into a classroom as a community in its own right.
