Fisher, an investigator, returns from Europe to Caïro and seeks the help of a psychotherapist. Under hypnosis he relives his experiences. In a much changed and decaying Europe he visits Osborne, his former teacher at the police academy and author of Fisher’s bible ‘The Element Of Crime’ advocates the assumption of the criminal’s point of view by the investigator; a method directed towards the solution of a crime through complete understanding of its origins. Fisher’s attempts to reconstruct the murder case lead him more and more to the character of Harry Grey. It is a perilous path which brings him closer to the truth – Grey no longer exists.
