In 1964 the government of Brazil was overthrown by a military coup. In 1968 the new government passed a law abolishing freedom of the press and civil rights. This increased the popularity of armed groups of left-wing extremists. Fernando and Cézar decide to take up arms and join a guerrilla organisation. Other members of their group include Julio, Marcão, a young girl named René and the militant group-leader Maria. Together they manage to pull off the largest bank raid in Brazil's history. However, Cézar gets wounded and is arrested and tortured in prison. On account of the censorship laws, none of this appears in the press. In order to break the power of the censor, Fernando suggests kidnapping the American ambassador…
