Scientist Manfeld is convinced there is gold on the moon, and he plans to set out on a space flight to prove his theory. He manages to raise funds from a greedy financier and some fellow scientists. His expedition is launched with huge publicity and the launching of the missile becomes a huge public event. Once gold is found, however, the members of the crew turn against each other in greed and jealousy and the successful mission turns into tragedy. In order to ensure the return of young Gustav, who had boarded the vessel as a stowaway, Manfeld and Frieda, the only female member of the crew, stay on the moon as the only survivors of the expedition.
