Hollywood, 1951. During the heights of the Cold War, the Commission of Anti-American activities opens an investigation on the subversive activities of the film industry. David Merrill, a director with the kind of talent big studios fight over, is one of the victims. He is being blacklisted for having attended several leftist meetings 12 years earlier. At first supportive, Daryl Zanuck, manager of Fox, offers David his lawyer's services. Quickly exonerated, David is able to return to the movie sets. However, during his first appearance behind closed doors, he refuses to denounce anyone.
