The impoverished landscape of northern Sweden in 1914: young Olof, only 14, leaves his foster parents' home to make his own living. He works as a logger, a brickyard helper, and a sawmill hand before becoming a bill poster, a candy salesman, and, to his delight, a projectionist for an itinerant movie exhibitor. Olof comes into contact with the labour movement. His attempts at solidarity with the workers provide him with at least some book knowledge of elementary socialist principles and the vision of a better world for the underpaid and uncompensated who work on the land or in the towns.
