The lead actors from South Korean classics Oldboy and Memories of Murder shine through in this witty buddy movie in which two men on the run - without realising it - rob a mafia gang.
South Korean director Im Sang-soo (The Housemaid, The President's Last Bang) had a plan to remake German crime film Knockin' on Heaven's Door (1997). But eventually, he decided to write his own screenplay. The result, Heaven: To the Land of Happiness, is still a buddy movie about two criminals. One, Prisoner 203, discovers at the end of his sentence that he has two weeks to live due to a brain tumour. The other, a hospital employee that was caught stealing. They flee in a hearse. Alas, the coffin in the back does not contain a body, but money from a criminal gang, led by a ruthless matriarch. The latter, of course, sends some of her men after the unsuspecting thieves. Tension is guaranteed, although it is the fireworks between the two lead actors that make this crime comedy sparkle.
“A terminally ill prisoner and a despondent hospital worker steal a hearse stuffed with mob money in Heaven: To the Land of Happiness. This combination of odd-couple road movie and crime comedy is well served by the casting of Choi Min-sik (Oldboy) and Park Hae-il (The Host) as the unlikely allies.” - Variety
