In search of America’s soul, who better to follow than America’s everyman Henry Fonda? In his ambitious and personal essay, Austrian director and film historian Alexander Horwath weaves intricate threads between the actor’s life and filmography, and the United States’ past and present. If not your vote, Henry Fonda for President deserves your time.
"No other nation has aroused such love and such hate", director Alexander Horwath states in this ambitious and personal essay on the United States. In Henry Fonda for President, he interweaves America's past and present with the life and work of actor Henry Fonda. Starting from his earliest memory of the beloved screen presence and (partly involuntary) personification of traditional values, the Austrian film historian traverses Fonda's oeuvre as well as five centuries of history across time and space. Horwath's co-pilot is the actor himself during his last interview ever, a year before his death in 1982. Earnest and humble, Fonda struggled to the end with his role in the bigger picture of America. He embodied both the American Dream and the American Nightmare, something you can also discover in Fail Safe and The Best Man, part of our Classics programme.
