The Sorrow of Belgium is a television series in three episodes, based on the novel by Hugo Claus, directed by Claude Goretta. Louis Seynhaeve is educated in a strict, religious boarding-school, and after that, in a Jesuits college. He is a precocious child, hiding his sorrows underneath a seeming indifference. In the troubled years 1939-1947, he sees the adults debating around him and considers them with ruthless discernment. Confusion, insatisfaction, lack of self-confidence, these feelings dominate his childhood and adolescence, in the heart of a colourful and astonishing family.
