Jan-Erik is a high school pupil in Stockholm. He is viciously humiliated in class by one of his teachers, who is nicknamed “Caligula”. One day after class, he meets Bertha in a tobacconist's. She leads him home to her room and persuades him to spend the night there, telling him how she fears that a strange, sinister man is constantly following her. Jan-Erik falls desperately in love with Bertha. One evening Jan-Erik arrives to find Bertha dead in her room. Caligula is pathetically hiding in the hallway. He is obviously responsible for the tragedy, but an autopsy suggests that Bertha died of a weak heart. Caligula is released, and sees to it that Jan-Erik is prevented from sitting his exams.
