At the end of the 19th Century, a group of painters gathered in Skagen in Northern Jutland. They carne from Sweden, Norway, Germany and Denmark in order to work with the beautiful light at the edge of the sea. One of them was Soren Kroyer, the most productive, bom under a lucky star and wanting everybody to be happy.
Hip Hip Hurrah! is not a documentary or a biography. It is a poetical, lyrical phantasy about a man who is obsessed with the idea of happiness - and at the same time a painterly genius. The film focuses on his relationship with 'the most beautiful woman in Denmark', Marie Tiepcke, who married him and became his favourite model, but who left him with a Swedish composer. The film also tells the story of Kroyer and Lille, a woman who loved him so much that she left Skagen in order to give birth to Kroyer's child. Lille did not want to make him unhappy. In the end, Kroyer hangs on the delicate thread that stretches between life and death. The film received the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival 1987.
