The son (and nephew) of a conductor, Michel Legrand himself regularly stood in front of an orchestra. But he is best known as the composer of soundtracks of some two hundred films and TV productions. His collaboration with director Jacques Demy is part of canonical film history. We all still sing along with Catherine Deneuve in Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, don't we? But he also wrote scores for legendary filmmakers like Agnès Varda, Clint Eastwood and Orson Welles. Because Legrand has also built a stellar career in the United States. His record includes thirteen Oscar nominations, three of which he cashed in on. Filmmaker David Hertzog Dessites portrays Legrand as a wise octogenarian who still travels the world to bring his music to an audience. He combines new footage with Super 8 films from Legrand's rich archive. A respectful documentary about a great Monsieur of French cinema.
