Several lonely hearts in a semi-provincial suburb of a town in Denmark use a beginner's course in Italian as the platform to meet the romance of their lives.
A young substitute minister, Andreas, who has recently lost his wife, arrives in a small grey suburb of Copenhagen. He finds himself being talked into taking part in an evening class in Italian by the affable receptionist at his hotel. There he encounters a group a lonely hearts: Olympia, a charming pastry shop assistant, who suffers of her father’s verbal attacks; Karen, a shy hairdresser with a mother ravaged by alcohol; Hal-Finn, a good-looking waiter; Giulia, who works in the kitchen of a restaurant and Jørgen Mortensen, whom she has fallen in love with. He becomes the centre of a story of love among losers, where each of the lonely characters finds a happy solution to an unhappy situation.
