Antwerp, 1959. Jack is a highly talented tenor saxophonist. Despite his fame, he is forced to work at the decks to earn a living. His dream is to go to New York, the Mecca of jazz, and meet his idols, the great American black musicians.
But to realize his dream, he needs money. Jack's group, the Bop Friends, plays in debilitating tea rooms or in the big band of Mickey Bunner, a rich, smug bourgeois. The orchestra's beautiful and sensual singer, Anita, is Bunner's wife, but also Jack's mistress.
