Katerina is bored by the loveless monotony of her life. her husband Zinovi is only interested in the family business, while his bullying and hypocritcal father, boris tImofeevich, constantly keeps a check on her. A new and handsome farmhand Sergei takes advantage of Zinovi's absence and seduces Katerina. As she finds her feelings finally requited so her resistance breaks down. Her love is promptly uncovered by Boris and Katerina is forced to defend her new found happiness. She poisons her father in law and together with Sergei she kills Zinovi. It is not long however before the love crime is discovered.
