Intended as a visualisation of the inner Zen experience, this is in any case a very beautifully photographed and somewhat strangely told ghost story that takes place in a misty primeval landscape that eventually opens up to an immeasurable sea. It plays with colours, stop motion and split screen. Matsumoto is the author of the terrible revenge film SHURA.
