The mysterious Duke Alexey Magalrogov is a cheerful and chivalrous character, whose courage and independence worry provoke but also inspire and mark everyone he meets. An unexpected guest, he comes to Kratochvile Castle, run by a nouveau riche, Stoklasa. The aristocrat is welcomed there, as he will bring luster and respectability to the castle, thus favouring Stoklasa's design to become its owner. Stoklasa's lawyer Pustina and his old friend Jakub Lhota also want to take possession of the manor. They will use Michaela, Stoklasa's daughter, as a means to achieve their aims.
