19-year old Tomek is an orphan, now lodging in a Warsaw high-rise flat with the mother of an absent friend and working as a post-office clerk. For a year he has been spying on Magda, a thiryish designer who quite frequently entertains lovers in het flat on the opposite side of the courtyard. He progresses from binoculars to a stolen telescope for this purpose, makes anonymous phone calls to Magda and plays such tricks on her as notifying the gas board of a supposed leak in her flat while she is with a lover. He takes a supplementary job as milkman to achieve contact of a sort with her...
