The story begins in the mid-50's, when Kuei-Mei a woman who has come to Taiwan from the mainland, is reluctant to live under her cousin's roof. Wedded to a restaurant worker through an arranged marriage, she becomes mother to her husband's three children. Soon, with the birth of twins, she becomes a mother of five. Kuei-Mei maintains a delicate survival in the next three decades, not only becoming a succesful entrepreneur but also dealing with family problems such as her step-children's hostility, her husband's gambling habit and his infidelity. With the changes of time, the strength and virtues of a traditional woman emerge.
