This is a story about war and its implications, seen from the perspective of a young Guatemalan Indian girl. Aschlop, our heroine, witnessed a massacre where she was separated from her brother Mateo. When the story opens, Aschlop flees from her village with her parents to a refugee camp in Mexico. She misses Mateo who has always been close to her, and swears to her brother's newborn child that she will solve the mystery of his disappearance. With unshakable courage, she sets out on a dramatic odyssey and protected by her guardian spirit, a puma, clandestinely crosses the border and returns to her native Guatemala.
