Sasha Nathwani, the British son of an Iranian mother and an Indian father, makes his feature debut with a tragicomic coming-of-age story Last swim, about an eighteen-year-old on the verge of adulthood. A dark shadow looms over her future, but on graduation day, she wants to forget it and just have fun with her friends.
Iranian-British student Ziba scores a place at University College London and will be allowed to study astrophysics, despite being the victim of some derogatory remarks at her admission interview. And she celebrated with a festive outing with three close friends and an apparent outsider. The day should culminate with the viewing of a rare meteor swarm. Secretly, however, Ziba is planning an irreversible move that - in her mind - will give her back control of her life. Uncertain about the present and the future, she struggles to balance her dreams with the bone-hard reality she can no longer keep hidden. Last Swim is a surprising coming-of-age story condensed into less than twenty-four hours. Carried by a delightful cast of youngsters, this debut from Sasha Nathwani - fronted by Deba Hekmat as Ziba - won the Crystal Bear for Best Film in the Generation 14plus competition at the Berlinale.
