Lino Brocka's latest film has stirred up an international furore even before its premiere: the filmmaker is to stand trial in the Philippines because of the Cannes screening of Fight for Us. "They claim there's no more censorship under Cory", says Brocka, "only 'classification. I think this law suit shows the real situation". It was revealed that Brocka 'smuggled' the film out of the
country to bring it to Cannes. He has been denounced by the chairman of the country's Film and Television Review Board and subpoenaed for acting without benefit of an export license. Brocka has already spent time in prison for his criticism of the Marcos regime. Now he returns to face an uncertain future. Fight for Us is the story of corruption and violence in the post-revolutionary period in the Philippines with the action centered around the Orapronobis vigilante group. (Screen International, Cannes '89)
