Film Fest Gent faithful Alexandre O. Philippe (The Taking, Memory - The Origins of Alien) surprises yet again, with a revealing documentary about the parallels between The Wizard of Oz and the universe of David Lynch.
Alexandre O. Philippe is a loyal guest of the festival with his documentaries that sparkle with cinematic pleasure. He has made his mark with films on Alien, The Exorcist and the shower scene from Psycho (78/52). As the title Lynch/Oz indicates, in his new documentary he examines the relationship between the cinema of David Lynch and The Wizard of Oz (1939), in which Dorothy ends up in a wonderful, Technicolor fairyland, threatened by the 'Wicked Witch of the West'. The special thing about Lynch/Oz is that Philippe serves more as a curator: he has asked seven writers and filmmakers (John Waters, Karyn Kusama, David Lowery ...) to profess their love for Lynch and for Oz for about fifteen to twenty minutes, and to tell what they consider the intersection between the two worlds. It's a surprising and satisfying approach.
“David Lynch refuses to discuss the ‘meaning’ of his films. However, he once said ‘there is not a day that goes by that I do not think about The Wizard of Oz.’ Lynch/Oz draws parallels between what has become known as a ‘Lynchian nightmare’ and the darker themes and characters that live in the merry old land of Oz.” - Screen Daily
