Midas Man is an engaging biopic about the genius behind The Beatles, manager Brian Epstein. He saw the potential of the band early on and would continue to manage the quartet until his untimely death. His life seemed full of glamour and success, but in reality he was tormented by inner demons that led him to substance abuse. Joe A. Stephenson's stylish feature casts a light on an under-appreciated man who made sure we got the best version of The Beatles.
He has been called the fifth Beatle, and even that is not enough of an honour. Brian Epstein was the Beatles' equally brilliant and tragic manager. In a visionary way, he promoted the group, a task that in the 1960s was at least as important as making the music. Nothing was left to chance. But behind the mask of a successful manager who had everything under control, there was a lonely man struggling with inner demons. Partly, though not solely, this was due to his homosexuality, which he was not allowed to be open about in the UK at the time. Midas Man is a biopic that does not shy away from controversy. The film paints a raw and honest portrait of Epstein's rise to fame, which ended with his untimely death in 1967. The film also offers a look at the swinging sixties in London, with the Fab Four as its central anchor. Essential viewing for anyone who occasionally hums a Beatles song.
