This film is dedicated to the problem of faith in post-communist Russian society which goes through a spiritual crisis. A young soldier, who spent seven years in captivity and became a devoted Muslem in Afghanistan, comes back to his native Russian village. His neighbours, even his mother and brother, treat him as a stranger. The conflict of the film is not only between different religions - Christianity and Islam, but also between the inner spiritual world of a human being and the general atmosphere of despair and the loss of moral values, characteristic for modern Russia.
