American director Jules Dassin, exiled to Europe by the Blacklist, was producer, director, writer and co-star of this Greek-made film. He was also the husband of star Melina Mercouri. Dassin plays Homer a naive american intellectual who tries to educate the carefree prostitute Ilya. Ultimately sensuality wins out over sensibility and it is "Pygmalion" Homer who becomes the irrepressible prostitute's pupil. The film represented something of an advance in cinematic censorship: Melina Mercouri was deliriously happy "fallen woman" who neither repented nor expired at fadeout time. Manos Hadjidakis' score and theme song won him an Oscar.
