On Christmas Eve, a man is being interrogated. He is the main suspect in a mysterious murder case. The man himself, Bernard Van de Wiele, does not understand why he has been taken in for interrogation. Because he stubbornly refuses to answer any questions, one of the inspectors brings in a typewriter, an Olivetti 82, reasoning that the man is a writer, and that way he’ll be able to tell his story. Gradually the man starts telling us the story of his life – a search for love and security: the hate of his mother because he reminds her too much of her Canadian lover, the tragic death of his little sister, his unhappy marriage and the close relation with his daughter Evelien. At the end of his story, the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle fall into their gruesome place …
